How I started Making sense of conversion maths?

Ed’s response on my blog post “Zero – 150 Unique visitors in 8 days” got me thinking. So I am going to cover this very important topic. Its called conversion maths. Or Rather

Conversion Maths : 80 Unique visitors = $3 Income or 80 Unique Visitors = $70 Income Which you’d chose?

Before I start off this article, let me confess, I am not one of those fanatic testers. In fact I pretty much hate when I have to do the numbers and figure out if I am making money or losing. But this is a fact you have to deal with if you want to do marketing and run a business. So here’s complete background on how I got started…

I wasn’t a Traffic Expert back then…

If you have been subscribed to my list then you know my story. During my first 13 months as a failure in marketing… I started blogging and I wasn’t very good at generating traffic. On one of my main blog I was getting 80–100 uniques a day after continuously blogging for 3–4 months (that’s how much I used to suck).

Largerectangle.thumbnailWhen you don’t get traffic, you only have one option to turn to… Become good at converting people into clicks (Using google adsense). I think I applied every click tricks for adsense I could find… Some techniques were even pretty objectionable too.

Like the one here called Adsense beautifier. This is an example of a wordpress plugin. Of course this thing can get High CTR’s and in those good ol`days Google used to pay pretty decent money with ever click.

Though I am not using these techniques (as you can increase CTR with bit more creativeness). For example creativity with adsense. Now I don’t want to make this post another improve adsense ctr. So lets get on with story.

In one of those lucky days I sold a product and got a commission of $70. Now this kind of commission outside Internet marketing is pretty un-heard of (at least for a guy like me). So I was curious, surprised and really happy, but I didn’t do anything with the info. Later next week, I sold another of those product and this time I started wondering…

What the hell I am selling exactly for $70 commission?

Now I dug into my affiliate stats and started comparing the prices and their commission structure. I dug into my own stats to tried to understand few things like..

  • Where people are coming from.
  • What kind of mindset these people into before they came at my blog?
  • Does that mindset change after reading my blog post (or pre-sell)?
  • Which of my posts were pre-selling these costly products?
  • Which keywords people are using to land up on my blog?
  • Does these keyword have anything to do with decision making on the product?
  • If I write this new post, will it help sell the product more?

Now as you can see, this was heavy duty work for lazy me. It took me like couple of weeks to gather that much data with small visitors. Remember, I didn’t knew about the list building concept back then…

Now after I got my data, I started working on …

  1. How to get more people into same mindset as when people were buying?
  2. Can I add something to get additional traffic to my specific blog page?
  3. Can I add something more to my blog post to increase conversion?

So armed with all these question and answers I started making changes to my layout structure. On how am I was writing my articles and pre-selling products.

Results : Are you interested?

CountmoneyAfter another 2 weeks I was able to sell 1 of those products in 2 days (or rather 180–200 unique visitors). now this was something good. Why ? because Before I was making $3 a day with adsense and odd change with affiliate products. Now I am selling a product at least 3 times in a week and making around $210/Week.

Now if you know the stats for affiliates, 90% of affiliates are not making $200 per month. Well Finally I was able to break that barrier.

Later on As I kept adding more post, information and becoming better at writing copy and converting, I was able to convert higher and make around $65– $70 per day just by selling affiliate products.

My lessons learned from this experience were

  1. If you know your basic numbers you can make more money
  2. Conversion Maths doesn’t have to be complicated. If doing A gets you more money, you just do that.
  3. Testing isn’t complicated (Hang on I’ll show you how too)

How to do basic testing…

Now there are tons of softwares and stuff out there helping you do basic testing. Of course there are also complicated formulas and terms floating (Multivirate testing) around too. Personally I do not worry about these things as much…

I want to find out 3 things first if I am starting out.

  1. How many unique visitors my pages are getting (in my case, I wanted to find out about that specific pre-sell page)?
  2. How many products I am selling from that page?
  3. What kind of offer I should make on my pre-sell page?

ConvThis should get you started to implement basic conversion and testing strategies. For example In that blog I am testing my character voice.

Currently this is converting at 17.9 % +– 10%. You might get worried by seeing this much variation but this version is outpulling my original by 300%. So I know for sure what kind of voice I am going to use in this market.

Whew. I almost wrote a 1000 word post this time around… Anyways I’ll add more on how to do strategy and conversion maths topic. So don’t you worry about it. For now… Sayonara.

The “Fatal Error” I was making as an affiliate

NO, It’s NOT about List Building.

You are probably quite aware of how things are in affiliate marketing. The rosy dream of getting checks while you are lounging around your swimming pool is what you have been sold on to. No hassles for customer support or creating product or testing your markets. All you need is to find a market and start promoting someone else’s product.

So lets get this picture straight. I mean I have been that way, where I’ve promoted quite a few products and tried to build list while hiding behind a website and an autoresponder. Of course blogging was a saving grace for me but still there is a missing piece.

Affiliate marketing is dog-eat-dog market. You know how tough it is to survive the number of affiliates out there. Don’t even talk about affiliate who uses unfair techniques like cloaking and cookie stuffing and take your credit. Though there are quite a few fatal errors that might be killing your chances.

Why Are You Not Creating A Brand?

I was talking to marketing friend (from real world… LOL). We were discussing affiliate marketing and how it has been hard for me. While we were talking he asked me a very simple question…

“Why are you not creating a brand?”

huh??? <– that’s me who just lost his train of thought.

“dude, it doesn’t matter what you are promoting you aren’t creating a brand”.

Though I dismiss him outright saying “he doesn’t know online marketing”. It kept bugging me for few days. Unless I realized how simple this question was.

My Slap on forehead moment…

Now if you don’t know what it is then lets say, you wake up late night one day and say “holy shit, I forgot to do my taxes”.

This is one of major mistakes or fatal errors that almost every affiliate are making. They are trying to hide behind a website and an auto-responder. If you think you are building a list and promoting affiliate products fiercely. I’d say you are leaving tons on the table.

Why Branding?

You must have noticed in Internet marketing, where marketers are promoting products with tons of free bonuses. The competition is so damn hard, it won’t surprise you if one day they’ll even offer their new born as a bonus.

Notice people who are cashing huge checks. They have a brand of their own. People like Ewen Chia, Frank Kern and so many more, they have their own brand. They are called experts in their own small world. But if you go outside the Internet Marketing niche, you’ll see there’s only rare few who are trying to make a brand as an affiliate. In fact the number is so dismal that you can’t even count. 

So how you go about creating a brand.

One of the Easy way to create a brand…

Now there are many ways to create brand online but I think One of the easy way to create brand is by creating products. The moment you create a product you become an expert (at least on percieved level).

I don’t understand why not you as a merchant handle all the customer headache (which is normally nonexistent) and you don’t have to worry about getting traffic as your affiliates will do that job. I bet today the toughest thing to do is getting traffic.

In today’s world, you can pay someone to create products for you. If it’s a hard good, you can find someone to source it for you. Heck You don’t even need to take inventory if you try hard enough. So what’s stopping you to become a merchant.

Second Easy way to create brand …

Second easy way to create a brand is by owning a word in your market. For example…

If I say “Mass control” who do you think of? Frank Kern right?

Or If I say “Manifesto”, who do you think of? Who else? Rich shefren.

Or if I say “Traffic secrets” Or “VRE” You automatically think of John Reese.

Or If I say “Stoming the search engines”, You’ll think of Brad Fallon and Andy Jenkins.

Or If I say “SEO book”, you’ll automatically think of Aaron Wall.

What about “Warrior Forum”, its Allen Says (though this one might be bit hard for people to remember).

Do you need more examples? Now this can be hard too… I am personally working on creating my own word (which I am yet to finalize) But its fun thinking about online branding.

If you have a website, podcasting has many applications that allow you to get in front of your customers, get your name out there, and ultimately make you more money. You’ll find there are tons of people who love to listen instead of reading a blog post or an article. These people download the podcasts on their IPod and listen as they go.

8 Step to Create your Own First Podcast.

Rss1. Spend 1 to 2 minutes and brainstorm some topics you are interested in. He doesn’t have to be new and brilliant content for your first podcast, it should simply be something you have a passion for.

2. Select one or two of those topics that catch your eye.

3. Spend 1 or 2 minutes and brainstorm interesting facts that you know about those topics

4. Group those facts together under one or two headings.

5. By now, you probably see the one you want to podcast the most. If not, you’ll need to choose one now.

6. Go online and find a web site that talks about that topic as well that you can review in your podcast.

7. Write down an upcoming event that is related to your area of interest. For example, if the area you’re going to podcast on his genealogy, you might be able to find a local genealogical society which has a genealogy fare coming up. If you can’t find anything, think of a past event that you can review.

8. Develop a brief script on your own, or from the example in the Example box that follows this exercise.

Mic2That was easy, wasn’t it? Sure! There’s nothing to it.You probably don’t even need the script. Often you just need a simple cheat sheet with you about the topics you are going to mention in your podcast.

As for as I am concerned, I need the whole script as English is not my first language. Even then I try to not rehearse when I am doing any kind of audio recording.

Claiming your own stranded visitors

Today we are going to talk about stranded visitors left in the middle at your website. No, this is not a talk about confusing navigation systems on your site/blog. But today we are going to talk about 404 pages.

404No matter how hard we work, we can still get few things wrong, few links doesn’t go where they should be. And our visitors end up on a 404 page. There are few options after this point, your visitors can take.

  • Click Back on the browse button and search again.
  • Click bank on the browse button and try to click again (most likely).
  • Check if there’s a bad URL or miss-type (least likely).
  • Leave your site completely (Most likely).

The most important information you should take is that you have a lost a probably loyal readers (or brand evangelist like Guy Kawasaki says).

When I changed my 404 error page on one of my blog, I see a jump in subscribers. Though I am not sure if I got those people from my 404 errors or not (I know I know, I should be testing it). Anyways There isn’t any major traffic increase to predict any other reason other than 404 errors.

No need to worry though, we can easily fix this thing for you.

Now How to Direct your traffic from 404 Page to your blog?

Here are few thing to get you involved your visitors into 404 pages.

1. Guide them – If you check my 404 page, you’ll see that I am telling them to search or to subscribe or to find content on my blog home page.

2. Ask them to take action: You have to tell people to take action if they still can’t find the content (ie email me).

3. Ask them to subscribe. – Again I am using Feedburner to provide blog updates via email. I’ve found feedburner’s delieverability exceptionally good.

4. Assurance of privacy – You can see that I am trying to re-assure about giving out email address.

These simple tips not only will help you guide few of your visitors in right line, but also help you build subscriber list (isn’t that your goal?).

That’s my money You Got There bud.

I remember a time when I used to wuss out when it was about to ask for my money. I know I have done my work and provided services but I really used to wuss out.

It was really a difficult habit to break for me. In my consulting with new entrepreneurs, freelancers, they immediately raised their eyebrows when I asked them to increase the price of their services and products.

I often found out they are eager to under promise and over deliver. Now that’s a great mindset. Heck, I just realized most entrepreneurs are in the business, because they thought they could do the job better than the guy who was giving bad service.

Quality is relative to the price.

This same problem carries over to Internet Marketing. When you’re thinking about pricing, I bet the very first thing you’re likely to do is say, hey, so what is everyone else charging for similar products? And you may go from there.

Right?

Now there’s nothing wrong with doing this at all, but there’s more to think about, and a lot more questions to ask than a simple can I beat what this guy is charging for his service?

Your price doesn’t have to beat everyone else’s out there for you to get sales.

Guy Kawasaki summed it up the best. He says “If you are talking to your customer, then think of it How it’s your money in her purse”.

You’ll go broke by competing on Prices.

You really need to be aware of what other people are charging for their products, but that doesn’t by any means signal that you have to go out there and beat them. Instead beat them by strategy not by pricing.

Here are few rules you should remember.

Rule 1: Premium Products Sell at Premium Prices

So, here’s rule number one. If you have a great premium product, don’t be afraid to bump the price up. You do not by any means have to beat a competitor’s price to be competitive, in fact, by putting your price up, it’s quite possible that you’ll outsell your cheaper competition.

Why? Because a higher price screams quality. Don’t, for one moment, believe you have to have the best price to make any sales. That’s just not true, you just have to have the best sales system, and of course a premium product if you really ever want anyone to buy from you again.

Rule 2: Wowing Through Price Is a Bad Move

The fact is, if your price is too low, people look at you and wonder why the heck you’re charging that tiny amount. They’re saying, “Wow, look at how little that costs. There can’t be that much to it.”

Just try to remember how many times you, your spouse, kids or your friends have bought something because it’s the expensive of the two…

Try to remember how many times you’ve thought “Eh, Its expensive, it must be good”.

Try to remember how many times the expensive product was just ok, yet everybody thought it’s isn’t a big deal. And you defended, but it’s the X expensive brand.

Rule No 3: Don’t Be Afraid

Too many people are afraid to take the leap and price their products as they believe they’re worth. Too many people look at competition and think they have to cost less otherwise no one is going to buy their stuff, or they’ll make less money out of it.

If you notice my consultation service as an example. I AM NOT AFRAID OF CHARGING HIGH. Do you think you can put price on the experience and knowledge I gained while I was building business? Heck No…

If for some reason you are still afraid of charging High… Then first charge high and Add more quality to your product/Service. I have a strong belief that I can Give more than I am charging for. and I do.

So are you going to charge high price for your services/products? Don’t forget quality is relative to the price.

Internet marketing success = Create products Fast + Traffic + Sales letter. More products you create more chances of your success increases… So where are you now?

Lighting fast product creation - Is it even possible?

If you have been following my strategies on the blog, then you know I can create short reports, ebooks in no time (my best time is 45 minutes for 20 page e-report). I like to push my limits, so I ended up with this my new product. From start to finish in 28 minutes. My next product was even lesser than that… How did I do it?

Here are steps you can use.

1. Researching your niche.

I know what you are thinking? this has been hammered to death many times, but hear me out. People always start opposite. They start with a product idea. I don’t want you to do that… You’ll start with a market and then drill down the multiple product ideas. I want you take a look at the niche you are in. Think of ways to narrow down your niche more. This is very important step. Find a market or product idea that has decent searches on daily basis and don’t care much about competition.

If you are knee deep in any market, then you always have an idea about these kinds of narrow niche ideas. That’s why I asked you to start from your own niche rather than trying to find a new one.

2. Decide on the product type.

After you have drilled down the niche, its time to decide how you are going to provide the products. Now my preffrences is written material material. I can type faster than normal folks and my mind flows better while I am writing.

3. Create your product.

Remember this is low entry product, so you don’t need to write 100 pages or create 2-3 hours of audio. You can create few pages of material, format is out properly in about 30 minutes or so. For example you can create 1/2 hr of audio product discussing the problem in the niche. There is no magic in here. You have to work it out.

The PLR route doesn’t work in this method. Why? because PLR products are way too general. Same for public domain products. So in the end you have to do it yourself. If you are doing it yourself, then you can create and start selling your product in about an hour.

The Easiest way to make killing on internet

Last year I trained someone on how to make killing with internet marketing. I was talking to this guy, he is another Indian I met by chance. He was telling me, how easy it is and How stupid he was to never listened(actually follow) to do things I told him to. If he had done earlier what I told him to, he’d be stinking rich by now…

Now the story behind all this is very simple… He asked me about the Easiest way to make money on internet. And I Told him the secret. For first 7 months he didn’t do what I told him to. Then one day in frustration he finally tried it.

Its very simple. You create a product and sell it.. HuH..!!!??? Don’t believe your ears?

But lemme comment on the Easiest Path. You see people tends to believe that If they are creating Adsense Sites they don’t have to work as hard as making a product.

Listen to me, The method which you used to create adsense sites is not at all different than create products and marketing it. Lemme give you a fast overview on the both methods.

Adsense Creation method :

Discover niche -> Find Keywords -> Generate Content -> Write Articles -> Optimize articles -> Bring traffic -> Monetize traffic.

Product marketing Method :

Discover niche -> Find Keywords -> Generate Content -> Create Product -> Set up an autoresponder -> Bring traffic -> Monetize traffic.

For the same traffic, you can get better rewards with Product Marketing. As You’ll have many chances to sell it to your visitor (if you are creating your subscribers list).

So How to go about Marketing a Product?

Today I am going to give you some thoughts about this kind of marketing. and then We’ll start the series based on this topic. I’ll be discussing finer details of the steps involved. So Here you go…

If you create a product based on what you like, or what you think people will like, you will be extremely lucky to sell one single copy, and you’ll probably have to bribe the person to buy it!

By finding a small segment of a much larger market in which people are actively buying, and where there are not too many competitors, is the best chance you have of making money from selling your own product.

The only way to create niche products or services that become best sellers is to discover what your potential customers want.

What problems are they facing that you can solve.

What pain are they experiencing that you can soothe.

You have to uncover your potential customers needs, their pain, even their dreams and aspirations.

There are some ways to get this information…

  • Use the search engines to find a number of forums related to the niche your’re interested in.Visit these forums regularly and find out what questions people are asking and how often they are asked.
  • The same question asked by many different people on many different forums is a possible topic for your product or service.
  • If you own an opt-in email list, send a brief survey to your subscribers to discover the problems they are facing.
  • If a common problem emerges from your survey, providing the solutions to this problem is a possible topic for your product or service.
  • If you don’t own an opt-in email list, you could send a solo advertisement to a few ezines with a large subscriber base and invite people to take part in your survey by offering a useful reward for their participation.
  • If you own a website which receives a lot of traffic, you could use a popup to invite people to your survey.

Wordtracker.com is one of the most useful research tools on the internet. You can use it to uncover what people are searching for on the internet.Not only that, you can use it to find out how often people search for different topics. It is a great tool for discovering niche markets.

On its own, Wordtracker is unlikely to point you to your next best seller, but when used in conjunction with surveys you have a very powerful research tool.

Private Label Rights is by far the quickest method of creating your own product. The only real disadvantage is other people will be using the same content as their own, so if you use the contents “as is” you won’t have a unique product.

Do a search for public domain products and once you have found one purchase a copy and have it digitized (made into an e-book). Matt Furey has made million dollars from one of the public domain product.

If a product is in the public domain, it means the copyright on it has expired and you are free to use the contents.

You can copyright your new digitized product, meaning nobody can sell copies in that particular format.

There are many ways to start off your own business on Internet. But You need to have a Blueprint or a method which can help you start properly. If you look around this blog, then you know I have even shared simple blue prints too.

How to break into “Make Money Online” niche.

Whenever I visit marketing forums (well I do visit them occasionally) I notice people asking question about “how to make money or how to get more traffic and things like that… and the immediate next thing I notice is their signatures in those forum.

Often I see something like this

“Learn how I make money $14,557 online per month, Click here for Free info”

This makes me wonder why in the world they are asking for basic advice if they are making that much already…

Its really crazy world out there, eh… People believe “Everyone wants to make money so they’ll get attracted to this thing”. Who knows if they had tried this kind of technique in other forums, may be they got few sales here and there… but still its a scam, I recommend you to not indulge in it.

I’ll give you few ideas that you can put into work…

Finally How to break into make money online niche

First thing if you believe selling to this crowd is easy as they are already talking/thinking about money then you got it wrong. Unfortunately these people have seen it all… chances are they’ll not fell for scammy tricks (well, human greed knows no bounds, so they might who knows)

In 2005-2006, I was making most of my income from adsense and affiliate using just my blogs. I become pretty successful using them and because I was posting on forums, people were curious and asking me many questions. One day I decided, rather than writing everyone individually I can create a report.

I wrote that report in like 45 minutes and then showed it another marketer friend of mine. He really liked what he saw and commented this is good technique and recommend me to sell it. Well I was apprehensive but I started selling it on forums.

The result : First 2 days generated $800 from the book. And as luck would have it there was another blog product launch at same time. So people were asking on the forum about this product…

Often other members would say, they can buy my book instead of this product as its a waste of money. And my technique will give long term profits. It increased my profits more.

3 days and I was make $1500 from my product… My best moment was when few of the top marketer (who I follow) told me they really liked my report. So based on my own experience I’ll share you few ideas on breaking this niche.

1. Honesty : You see I was honest and showed people how to make money with blogs. This technique was easy to learn, copy and implement. In fact if I gave you this book today, you can use it and make it work. So the technique never changed from last 2 years.

2. Make a difference : Another thing is try to make a difference in other people’s life. In forums, my advice on lots of topic (mainly on blogging) helped many people. So they knew my methods work.

You have to make a difference in people’s life. I know someone who bought a product and started keeping a journal about his efforts. Now this guy was updating his blog regularly. People on forums were reading his blog just because of curiosity. People were learning from his mistakes and success. He was adding value to their lives.

From what I know he had quite a decent readership and few of those buy products from his affiliate links. In the end his efforts started paying off… He was earning decent income in not only the other niche but also in Internet Marketing niche.

3. Challenge Yourself :  In going with the above two tip, here’s another thing you can do. Challenge yourself to product results… This is another tactic that people who want to lose weight use. They’ll post their pictures in forums and say “I’ll lose X lbs by ‘date’”.

You can set yourself apart by saying something like “I’ll earn income using X technique and in Y days”. Willie Crawford used this technique to create more of his following. Though he was known marketer but, he got few of the forums buzzing with his “I’ll make million dollars in 90 days” statement.

4. Look at what others are doing and do Opposite : Start thinking differently. I suggest look at what masses are doing and start doing opposite of them. This is the secret of success. When people were building websites… I went on different direction. I used free blogs to make income.

5. Don’t Scam people : Last but not least, Please don’t scam others. If I do something wrong I have hard time sleeping at night. And to tell you the truth, I love my sleep. I kinda hate if it gets interrupted. I hope I don’t see more people with “Scammy” signatures in forums anymore. It doesn’t make me angry but a little sad.

Yes, I just said it… you have to learn how to write… no matter what… If you can write, you can create products, write sales letter and what not…

If you haven’t yet started writing and created your own products and are thinking to yourself that you’re not very good at writing, let me ask you this…

Is building your customer base by the thousands worth your spending some time on improving your writing? You know it is!

Look…writing is not hard. The sooner you start writing, the sooner you’ll get the hang of it. The more you write, the better you’ll become.

And if you think that you can’t write an entire ebook, then create the ebook “one-article-at-a-time.” Break your subject matter up into sections and write about each section as a separate article. Then, arrange the articles in a logical order and…Voila! You’ve got your own ebook!

In fact I show you don’t even have to write a whole damn book.

It’s a skill worth learning. Where else can you get paid for putting “words” onto paper?! This is an amazing business to be in.

Listen… my writing style makes me a lot of money. But, do you think I was born with this skill? Heck no! I had a natural knack for it, but I still had to learn the basics and refine my skills. And it has paid off handsomely. It’s one of the best investments of my ‘time’ that I’ve made!

There’s only one Advice I have for you… Just write… Just open your word processor and type and type and then some more…
