Day 2: How to choose a Hot, rabid niche – II?
Oh, btw I do all of this kind of work on weekends as I can spend hours without any distraction or laziness. Later in the week I devise method to take over that niche.
Ok lets get starting with our niche exploring.
First open up your firefox browser. Open 3 tab browser with google.com, yahoo.com & msn.com in them.
Take that list of possible niche topics and one by one, plug those into the search engine (Google is a good starting place purely because it receives the most traffic in search engine terms)..
At the top or bottom of the page, you’ll see how many results came up for that topic. Write the numbers down on your sheet of paper, next to the topics.
Lets say We searched for Weight loss. You can see there are 84,400,000 results just for weight loss. Now don’t worry about the numbers. Just make a note of it in some of your notebook.
Now we are going to check the sponsored results section of Google, yahoo and msn. These are called sponsored ads and are often on the right hand side of google/yahoo/msn search results (sometimes they’ll show on the top of organic results in blue shaded box).
NOTE: If for some reasons you are not seeing any sponsored ads then there is a good chance that merchants are targeting their ads in US cities only. In that case, find a
Do this for every topic you have found so far.
Why these two steps are important?
- I want to see how many competitive pages are indexed in Google.
- I want to see how many competition who are promoting their sites using pay per click to sell their products. (That basically gives you an idea that market have buyers)
On a Brilliant Side Note : This technique has one big advantage. You can spy on your competition and find out what they are doing. You can look at their marketing strategy and try to find a hole that they might not be fulfilling in the market and then devise a strategy to enter the market from this angle.
Why I am suggesting spying on competition? Well you already have all the hard work done for you by your competitors and by creating an angle you have better chances to succeed than fighting it out head on with your competitors.
If you don’t want to listen to me, fine by me.. you’ll learn as you grow… I did…
Finally Choose The Markets:
Phew, we are the final step. Right now we have all the data we need to weed out bad markets from good ones. Heres a checklist of things you need to weed out.
1. Weed out any market that has more than 5 million of results in google. Remember we are not using quotes “weight loss” in our searches right now. Quotes can cut down quite a few number of results.
If you are using quotes then I’d say weed out any market that has over 1 million results in google.
2. Weed out any market that doesn’t have any sponsored ads in google or yahoo. Now before that make sure to check with US,
3. Find out your competitors in the market and note down their website address, contact etc with added notes on what kind of product they are selling… Ideally We want them to sell digital products like ebook, audio, streaming videos, membership sites etc.
Now wipe that sweat off your forehead. You are done. We have done major grunt work so far. If you have come this far following me, then pat yourself on the back and realize most people NEVER come this far or do so much grunt work. You have already differentiated yourself from the pack and ready to launch your website.
I am almost done…
