Social Networking Exposed : How to dominate the Social Media Scene
If you haven’t heard of social networking or social media by now, you must be living under the rocks or something. Its Da BUZZ word these days. From facebook to orkut to squidoo… Web 2.0 is another buzz word that has been thrown around lately along with networking…
Anyways today, I’ll show you how to use social networking scene (Or web 2.0) to get traffic to your websites.
If you were asked to define what social networking was, would you be able to give an accurate definition? Unfortunately, most individuals cannot, even though it is likely that they participate in some form of social networking, especially online.
Social networking is defined as the grouping of individuals together into to specific groups, often like a small community or a neighborhood. If you ask 10 experts “what is web 2.0”, there is good chance you’ll get ten different answers. But there is one common & important thing they’ll tell you about it is that Web 2.0 is community driven.
The traditionalist Web 2.0 Approach
Since most social networking websites work to connect Internet users who have the same goals and common interests, there is a good chance that your online friends will enjoy reading your blog.
When it comes to promoting your blog on social networking websites, you have a number of different options.
Your first option is to include a link to your blog in your community profile or profile page. This will allow other community members to checkout your blog, only if they wish to do so.
The other way is to inform your online friends of your blog through private messages. Once you join a social networking website and create or join a network of friends, you should easily be able to communicate with those friends.
Sending each of your friends a private message with information and a link to your blog tends to be more effective than just placing a link in your profile or on your profile page
If you buy all those web 2.0 ebooks or products, often they advocate creating a profile and uploading good content and then Sell them…
Now that’s well and good but why not I write or produce good content and put it on my blog or website. According to the “sources”, these web 2.0 sites rank better. Of course the more you participate, the more you’ll be able to generate traffic from these sites.
Which brings me to my very important next point.
The traditionalist Web 2.0 Myth of 100 Million Users.
If you ever read Da web news (well I kinda stopped watching TV 5 yrs ago, so I only read), you’ll find all of these websites claiming to have 100 million or so users.
Now when a greedy marketer listens to that. He starts drooling… He thinks of potential of 100 m users. He wonders if he sells something for $10 a piece and with 1% conversion, He’d make 10 m in no time (Of course I am exaggerating here but don’t we all want to dream that). Now imagine 100 m users in myspace and another 100 m users in facebook and so on… He’d become billionaire in record time.
But I always wondered how many people in those 100 million are really active? I run a few forums and always saw the huge disparity between registered users and active ones… I wondered how much different it is for them…
They make it seems like THEY are the most happening place on earth. Of course they’d do it so, as it’s their bread and butter. Right.
When you start thinking like that, you do become depressed. The social media dreams seems shattered. If you ever tried marketing on myspace, then you know what I am telling you is the truth. I did marketing like a maniac with zero results… The only ones making money was people who were selling new myspace ebook or software…
I wondered If I need to smart`en up a little. I knew the way we are doing things are not exactly right. So how do you dominate the Social Media?
How to Dominate Social Media?
I started noticing something when I was watching my girl friend and my sister use networking site, search engines and everything web 2.0 (No, they were not marketing there).
Now it just happened that they were looking for something, so they were surfing and researching. They were jumping from one site to site… Now these girls weren’t newbies but aren’t geeks… But I noticed they were still using pretty darn sophisticated pattern of researching on internet.
I was looking for patterns on how they were getting influenced. Frankly speaking I was bit astounded…
In SEO 101 : experts teaches us about keywords and research like it seems people behind the computers are dumb robots. And we (website owners) follow them and create websites which attracts dumb robots (no visitors yet).
Seriously we are not giving these people much credit.
If you seriously want to know how people behind work and act, then for a few days, watch someone close to you (your spouse or friend or siblings or parents, not in that order ;)) who doesn’t understand SEO, marketing and other stuff work their way around the search engines… You’ll learn tons of things of user behavior.
So, how in the world do you dominate the social media, then? Well I’ll talk about this in my next post. You have to wait for it. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.
I’ll talk more about their behaviour and how to influence it in way that can profit you… But before that you have to do some learning of your own…
Your homework for today will be to notice how people around you research and use social media. It’ll change the way you think about web 2.0. And in fact it’ll help me explain it to you more clearly if you are already prepared.
