Web 2.0 and Why You should be Concerned About it?

Day 13: Today we are going to talk about Web 2.0 and Why You should be concerned about it. This method can bring you tons of traffic and can be really effective for promotional purposes.

What’s the Deal with Web 2.0 & How it can help mah blog or website?

Are you chasing the latest net revolution of web 2.0? Did you just create a video with a sneak preview of your website and uploaded to youtube or google video? If you did, congratulations you are participating in Web 2.0 marketing…

It’s all part of marketing strategies which are focused on Social media and community users. This is nothing new but hey we need our daily dose of new shiny terms… ain’t it?

My goal for this article is to make you realize if web 2.0 suits your needs or not rather than giving techniques on video spamming youtube or google video… In then end I’ll give you my 6 points checklist for deciding on you 2.0 strategy.

The 1.6 Bn Dollar Question is How it all started?

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and right there in front of you a letter asking you to sell your website for 1.6 Bn dollars. What your reaction would be?

Well this is what happened to youtube.

The acquisition combines one of the largest and fastest growing online video entertainment communities with Google’s expertise in organizing information and creating new models for advertising on the Internet.

The Question remains WHY? Why anyone would pay 1.6 Bn for such a site?

If you think from human evolution perspective you understand this is the nature of the beast (human). My first grade teacher told me “Man is a social animal”. I didn’t believe how true she was… Its all because Humans have no other way to survive without community. You tell me how many Tarzans we know of?

In my other article I talked about Social Networking sites. This is what it leads to. Where people congregate in huge numbers on daily basis leading a double life on net. Taking into the account the internet seems to expanding with a big bang effect with thousands of new online users on daily basis. This move was predictable.

If you ask 10 experts “what is web 2.0”, there is good chance you’ll get ten different answers. But there is one common & important thing they’ll tell you about it is that Web 2.0 is community driven.

Allow me to explain. Web 2.0 is all about community, connections with people and sharing. All the tagging, social content, social networking, blogging, and virtual communities people point to as examples of Web 2.0 come out of this

Do you know about a game called Second life? It’s a virtual world online, where you can buy real estate, create business, sell and buy things and do almost everything you do on daily basis. It just exactly as the name says “Second Life”. Now we have thousands of users joining on daily basis spending in their so called “Second life”.

Just imagine what if you have access to this kind of community? What if you can promote yourself through these kinds of users? What if… There are so many what if we have here…

This is the main reason why almost everyone is so excited about web 2.0. This is what Marketing Expert Dan Kennedy says about “Controlling the herd”. If you create a community like this, you are effectively controlling the herd. And that’s where the riches are.

Now we know what exactly web 2.0 is? But how can you use it to promote your blog?

These communities comes in many shapes & kinds i.e facebook, myspace, video sharing sites, social bookmarking sites like digg, stumbleupon etc. When you are building a strategy for your Web 2.0 marketing you need to take care of these factors in the back of your mind.

For example if you have sports, animation, comedy, action genre blog then it might work for you to create a video and upload it on Google video or youtube.

If you have an interesting story you might want to share on digg.com. Or if you have flash animation you might want to use stumble upon. Its all dependent on what kind of media you are serving on your blog.

There might be situations when web 2.0 might not even help you… Lets say if you are selling handkerchief then creating a video or finding a story which excites people about your handkerchief is pretty darn hard.

I know Robert collier in early twentieth century sold Napkins using Direct mail but its still pretty tough to sell them. Here is small checklist that might help you to decide your 2.0 campaign.

  1. Do you have an exciting story?
  2. Can you create an exciting video?
  3. Is there a good reason why I (visitor) should share your site with my friends?
  4. Can I share your site easily with my friends?
  5. Can you find a community that needs a place to congregate online?
  6. Can you create a reason why it should be your website?

Phew, If you follow these 6 point checklist then you might be able to create a web 2.0 marketing strategy for your blog or your website. Remember Its all about “Finding a Place for People to Come together and share”.
